You may not know this, but when a loved one is undergoing cancer treatment, you are not able to bring them flowers to brighten their mood. This is because plants and flowers can harbor fungal spores that place patients at risk for infection. Cancer patients are very susceptible to infections due to a compromised immune system from their illness and chemotherapy.
How do I know this? My mother was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in December. Once diagnosed, she was admitted to the hospital right away and underwent 2 rounds of chemo while stuck in the hospital for over 2 months. Although I could tell that they really tried to make the blood cancer floor a welcoming place with smiling faces and decorations, there were never any bouquets of flowers. Once you get off the elevator, there is a large sign warning visitors that no fresh flowers or fruit are allowed on the floor.
We celebrated both my mom’s birthday and Christmas at the hospital:
It is tough to celebrate while in the hospital getting treatment, so I am hoping that we can have a great Mother’s Day now that she is home! I got some inspiration when I was at Walmart the other day. I found the American Greetings One-Stop Shop for Mother’s Day.
It is chock full of great cards, gift bags, and gifts. As part of the display, they have a section called the Flower Shop. This inspired me to go with a floral theme for Mother’s Day.
Floral gifts for moms in cancer treatment
My mom is still doing chemotherapy while at home, so we are unable to give her flowers (a staple gift for Mother’s Day). I did some brainstorming and came up with these ideas for floral gifts for moms in cancer treatment:
A framed printable
My mom’s favorite flower is the Calla Lily. I created this printable with Calla Lilies on it, purchased a frame and added the print to it. It is the perfect saying! If you’d like to print this 5″x7″ floral printable for your mom, just fill out the form below.
Fake flowers
Although they aren’t the real thing, some fake flowers can still look beautiful! I purchased the Calla Lily above in the home section of Walmart. I’m going to add it to the gift bag to give it another personal touch. Added bonus – they last forever!
A card
The American Greetings One-Stop Shop has a ton of great cards for Mother’s Day. I had a really hard time choosing which one I wanted to get since so many of them had pretty flowers on them. I love the pops of color on this one.
Floral themed food
In the photo above, you will see a really cute cupcake decorated with a flower on top. You could purchase something like this like I did, or make your own for an extra special touch. There are so many different ways you can incorporate flowers: flower-shaped cookies or cakes, or use a flower-shaped cookie cutter to cut little sandwiches! Get creative.
Gift bag
I am going to bring everything together in a floral-themed gift bag that I also picked up at the American Greetings One-Stop Shop at Walmart. It even came with the matching tissue paper!
I know my mom is going to love these ideas! She deserves the #BestMomsDayEver!

Dealing with cancer is such a difficult time in a person’s life! I bet the flowers, even though they’re a small gesture, help a mom know you’re supporting her!

What great ideas for a cancer patient. Yes the smells are just overwhelming for cancer patients. I know my mom suffered with it so.

I love this idea of flower themed gifts for cancer patients. My sister in law is undergoing chemo, and I never thought of a flower painting, but I know she would love it! Thanks for the great idea.

I had no idea that patients with cancer can’t have flowers (or fruit) while going through chemo. I love the way you took a big downer and made it into something great. The floral topped cupcake and calla lily print are my favorites.

What wonderful options to help brighten a cancer patient’s stay. Hospitals can be so sterile that anything to add a personal touch is fantastic.
