Since the beginning of the year, I have been following a low carb ketogenic diet and it has been going pretty well. I have lost 15 pounds and have kept it off for a few months now. As with any diet, it definitely takes some getting used to. When I first started out, one of the hardest things for me to give up was milk (especially chocolate milk). Did you know that one cup of whole milk has about 12 grams of carbs and 12 grams of sugar? This definitely means that milk is not a keto friendly drink!
Dan is a milk drinking fiend, and we both like to have a glass of chocolate milk pretty much every night. He hasn’t been able to give up this daily indulgence, but I have been trying to use almond milk as a substitute. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of almond milk as a drink. I can use it in some recipes and not notice a difference, but I can’t drink a glass of it or put it in my coffee. It just isn’t creamy enough and obviously doesn’t taste the same. I have tried making chocolate milk with almond milk and sugar-free chocolate syrup to keep the beverage lower in carbs. It is definitely not a good substitute for me, so I have gone most of this year without drinking any milk! Until now…
Keto friendly milk substitute
Recently I discovered Hood Calorie Countdown at Walmart and now I notice it at pretty much every local grocery store. Calorie Countdown is a milky smooth dairy beverage that blends ultra-filtered milk with water, cream and other ingredients. This delicious combination not only has a creamy taste but also has fewer calories, less sugar, and fewer carbohydrates than regular milk. In other words, I’ve found my keto friendly milk substitute!
Hood Calorie Countdown
Calorie Countdown has four varieties: Whole, 2%, Fat-Free, and Chocolate. Yep, chocolate… and I LOVE it! So far, I’ve tried the 2% and chocolate, but all of them are a great milk substitute, just check out the stats below:
- A 1 cup serving of Calorie Countdown 2% Reduced Fat has
- 70 calories
- 3 grams carbs
- 2 grams sugar
- A 1 cup serving of Calorie Countdown 2% Reduced Fat Chocolate has
- 80 calories
- 5 grams carbs
- 3 grams sugar
Now I can enjoy a chocolate drink every night with Dan and not feel guilty! I’ve also found that I really like the 2% over my favorite berry crumble recipe (I’ll share that with you in a future post). Dan likes it with his granola and says he can’t really tell the difference.
