There are many ways to improve a home or apartment without spending a ton of money and remodeling huge portions of the house. A lot of times all it takes are little adjustments to make a difference. Some houses may have smaller rooms that get cluttered fairly quickly and with little or no windows; light can go wanting. There are a few easy improvements to make more space and to add light in these smaller areas of a home.
Assess the situation and begin
First, homeowners should do an audit of all the items, big and small, that they use on a regular basis. All items that do not meet this criterion should be set aside. Depending on the storage areas in the home (closets, attics etc.) residents should take these items and store them up and away out of the room. This can create space in cabinets and cubby holes inside the room. Other small items that may be cluttering up the room can then be put into these locations. Organizing in creative ways is cheap and very effective.
Hang it up
Another useful way to get rid of clutter is to add hooks on doors and walls. These can be used to hang up things that may be stored elsewhere, like towels or coats. The fewer items on the floor or on any surface area, the more useable space within a room.
Look for unused space
If the room has large dressers or a bed, homeowners can consider putting items below. This is unused space, and can easily fit plastic containers
that may hold toys, clothes or other items. This is yet another cost effective way to add space.
Adding more light
Once more space has been added, homeowners can focus their attention of adding more light inside the room. A great way to add more light effectively and at little cost is adding a large mirror inside the room in question.
When adding a mirror, it is important to be aware what it will be reflecting. If it reflects a dark closet, it may not prove very useful. If, however, it reflects a bright hallway or a window where sunlight comes in, light will naturally reflect off of it and add natural light to the room. This will also save electric costs since it can take the place of lamps or other light producing devices.
Adding space and light can be very simple and affordable. It does not require extensive or expensive work to achieve the same results.
