Are you looking for a neat way to show your wedding or engagement photos? Or do you have old family photos that you would like to display? Here is a really cool (and cheap) idea using mason jars and vegetable oil. Whatever photos you choose, I would make sure that they are black and white to help add to the look.
Wouldn’t these look great in a kitchen? Or on your nightstand as a lovely reminder of a special day?
Wedding Idea: If you haven’t gotten married yet, these would look nice as part of the centerpiece on your wedding reception tables. You could include photos of you and your spouse-to-be throughout the years! Ooh, my wheels are turning now!
How would you use these DIY photo “frames”?

Have you tried this with color pics? Just wondering if it can be pulled off and still have that vintage look. Also, if I make these up 2 weeks early will the coloring change or should I do it closer to the event?
Thanks for any suggestions
Stacey Werner says
I haven’t tried it with color photos. If you try it, let us know how it goes.
Scott says
Such a unique trick! I wonder how they would turn out if you used Kool Aid! π
Scott says
We didn’t do any canning last year so we have a ton of empty mason jars laying around! Great idea for them!
Lydia says
Can we use baby oil instead of the regular oil
Stacey Werner says
Good question, Lydia. I’m not sure. I’ve never tried it. I would try it with a copy of a photo first and see how it goes. Let me know if it works for you.
Cynthia Nicoletti says
I love these jars!! The photo jars are beautiful.
Alicia says
This is so awesome! I have never seen anything like this before where you can use pictures.
Madie Ramsey says
Do you keep the vegetable in it or pour it out after soaking the picture?? Doing this for my anniversary next week!
Stacey Werner says
You keep it in there with the photo floating in it.
Happy Anniversary! How many years?
Chrysa says
I love this idea! They are so pretty and look fun/easy to make! Pinning this!
Gabby says
Do the picture have to be printed on printer paper or regular paper works?
Stacey Werner says
You could use either if you laminate them first. Printer paper wouldn’t hold up to the oil.
Mary Hill says
Really cute idea. I will have to try this. Do you display it on your fireplace mantel? Other ideas?
Mireille says
what a cool idea – I never would’ve thought of it
Harriet says
I love what you did with that jar. That is such a cool idea!

hi,
It looks like this vintage picture in a jar post is from about 3 years ago. However, I was hoping you would know if it was possible to color the oil? I’m getting married in June. Colors are MINT, WHITE & SILVER. I was thinking of trying this and coloring the oil to a mint color to tie into my theme. Do you think it would work? With my wedding being in June, how far in advance do you suggest doing this? I don’t want the oil to “eat” at the picture. So not sure if I do it now if it will last or if I should wait until a few days prior? Thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Stacey Werner says
I would test all of this out now, Shannon. That way you don’t have any surprises later! Try making one up now with any photo… tint the oil and let it sit for a couple weeks. You’ll be able to tell if the tint works and see if the oil eats at the picture (which I don’t think will happen). Better safe than sorry!
I’d love to hear about your results when you test it out. Let me know!

was just wondering if maybe i coukd use a darker lets say like olive oil to add a darker effect rather than vegetable oil?

Super cool!!! π Michelle
Shelia Nichols-Nelson says
Can I just copy picture onto regular copy paper?
Stacey Werner says
If you do that, I would probably laminate it to make sure it stays looking pretty! Let me know how it turns out!
Laurel@Let's Go on a Picnic! says
Do you think it would be necessary to replace the oil every so often so it wouldn’t spoil?
Stacey Werner says
I’m not sure, but that would probably be a safe bet.
Salina says
I love this idea! I am thinking about using them as part of my centerpieces at my wedding next year. I am going to put flowers that my fiance has got me over the years in the back that I have saved and dried out. It would be so personal and make amazing house decorations afterwards. π
Stephanie Trujillo says
I really want to try this thank you for the post this would be awesome as a decoration for pretty much anything π
Kelly King says
What a cute idea I will have to make some black and white photos and try it.
Tracy Awalt Juliano says
This is truly one of the coolest things I have ever seen… and so simple to do. I can’t wait to try it. I wonder if the oil would eventually eat away at the picture? I don’t think I’d use an original anyway, I’m just curious…
Stacey says
I’m not sure about that Tracy, but you are right…best to use a copy of a photo and not the original just in case.
adrienne warren says

Laura M. says
This is SUCH a cute idea!!!
Lyn A. says
This is such a cute and creative idea. What a perfect way to showcase my greatgrandparents vintage photo. Of course, i’ll have to preserve the original copies.
Katie Wurn says
That’s really neat. What happens to the photos if you ever want to remove them from the jar? If you don’t want to ruin the original photo, can you copy the picture and laminate it instead?
Julia says
Very cool! I’ve never seen this done before. Thanks for sharing.
