The day I brought our beagle, Honey, home for the first time I had to drive 2 hours with her in the car. As a first-time dog owner, I didn’t know what to expect and hadn’t thought about much ahead of time. After about an hour, I stopped at a gas station to let her out to “stretch her legs”. I wanted to give her some water but hadn’t brought a bowl with me. I ended up buying paper plates and bottled water at the gas station and poured the water on the plate for her to drink. I can still remember how unprepared I felt!
Now 10 years later, I make sure to always be prepared. This includes making sure she is happy. Dan and I love to treat her. She is our furbaby after all! She gets plenty of kisses, belly rubs, water and yummy nutritious food. The food she is eating now is Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® DISH Beef & Brown Rice Recipe which I picked up in the pet aisle at Giant. When I brought it home the first time, she went crazy over it. I opened the bag and she nearly knocked me over to get to it. I’m thinking that it is because Nutrish DISH has real U.S. farm-raised beef (or chicken) as the first ingredient. What beagle doesn’t go crazy over meat, right? Plus, it is made with whole ingredients safely cooked in the USA. You should treat your dog to a taste of this food. Trust me, they will thank you! Click below to save $4.00 on Nutrish DISH*.
Upcycled collapsible dog water bowl
In addition to treating Honey with Nutrish DISH, Dan and I love taking her with us to the park for long walks. The way she jumps around when we say the word ‘walk’ shows us how much of a treat this time is for her. Every time we go, I make sure to bring along a collapsible water bowl so we can give her water breaks when we stop along the way. I learned from my mistake 10 years ago and make sure to bring along a bowl for water. We used to have a fancy portable water bowl we bought at a pet store but misplaced it in one of our moves. Instead of buying another one for $12, I decided to make one of my own and I used the empty Nutrish DISH bag to make it!
How to make a collapsible dog water bowl
Supplies I used for the bowl:
- 1 empty 3.75 lb bag of Nutrish DISH
- Pen or marker
- (Optional) Craft or duct tape
- (Optional) Velcro

Step 1: Clean the inside of the bag with soap and water and let dry. Fold the bag so the bottom is facing you. Use a straight edge to draw a line across the bag at least 1.5″ above the fold.
Step 2: Cut along the line and discard the top of the bag. Now, you could technically stop here and have a very easy and FREE dog bowl that you just fold up and put in your pocket. I decided to go further and make mine look prettier. Why not, right?
Step 3: Use a straight edge to draw a line across the bag where the bottom of the bag meets the front (approximately 1.5″).
Step 4: Cut down both sides of the front of the bag and along this line only removing a section of the front of the bag. Now, again, you could stop here and have a FREE collapsible dog water bowl. Now it would be a bit easier for your pup to reach the water from the front of the bowl, yet the bowl is still sturdy. As I said, I decided to press on…
Step 5: Using craft tape or duct tape, start in the middle of the bag and press the tape firmly against the bag as you roll it around to the opposite side. Leave a little extra on both sides so you can fold it over. Repeat until the whole front and back of the bowl are covered. Note: I used a large craft tape. It is a bit see through but still makes the bowl look better. If you don’t want it to be see through, use duct tape or maybe even contact paper like I did for this project.
Step 6: Repeat step 5 for the two sides of the bowl. Then cover up any parts of the bag you can still see. DO NOT cover the whole inside of the bag. The tape is most likely not food (or water) safe. You don’t want any chemicals getting in your dog’s water!
Step 7: Fold the bottom of the bag up. Score all of the bag folds by pressing firmly along the edge. Then fold the back of the bowl over and score the new fold. Now you have what looks a lot like a wallet that won’t stay closed.
Step 8: Add velcro to close the flap. I had these dot velcro pieces laying around so I used them. A regular piece of velcro strip would probably work better to hold it together.
Now you can “close” the bowl, fold it up and put it in your hiking bag for when it is needed!
Now I am prepared when Honey comes along with us for long walks!
