Green cleaning isn’t something that is necessarily new to the marketplace. With organic, all-natural cleaning supplies available at local super-centers, green cleaning products are fairly accessible. However, many people complain that they don’t feel the products they are using clean as well as bleach and other chemical-filled products.
In the 20th century, every household was filled with bleach and other chemical-filled cleaning products. However, studies that include the harmful side effects of using such chemicals in our homes have encouraged people to use organic household cleaners.
The move to a more eco-friendly lifestyle comes with an increase in price. Paying $1 for a gallon of bleach now turns into $6 for a 12 oz. bottle of all-purpose cleaner. For all of your day-to-day household cleaners, why not make your own? Lemon’s strong citrus acid erodes away germs, dirt, and grime. Vinegar and baking soda are also capable of cleaning just about anything. In order to make your own cleaning supplies from home, all you need is water, lemons, baking soda, borax, dish soap, tea tree oil, essential oils, vodka (yes, vodka!), and vinegar.
½ C. warm water
½ C. vinegar
2 tbsp. lemon juice
15 drops tea tree oil
Pour all contents into a spray bottle, shake, and use on countertops, floors, walls, toilets, sinks, and showers.
Toilet Bowl Cleaner:
1 C. Borax
¼ C. Vinegar
Mix both ingredients together and pour into toilet. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes, then scrub.
Carpet Stain Remover:
1 tbsp. clear dish soap
2 tbsp. vinegar
2 C. warm water
Cornstarch or baking soda
Clean up anything that you can from the stain area, sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda on the stain spot to absorb the stain, combine the rest of the ingredients and blot onto the stain.
1 lemon, sliced
2 C. water
Mix water and lemon slices in a large bowl, and cook in the microwave on high for 1 minute. Let it sit in the microwave for 3 minutes, and then wipe microwave clean.
Vodka isn’t just for your college days, and household luxuries don’t have to come at the expense that you are accustomed to. With similar household necessities found in the above recipes, you can quickly make a linen spray and carpet spray for only a few dollars.
Homemade Room Spray:
3/4 C. filtered water
2/3 C. vodka
30 drops scented oil [Tip: Mix two scented oils such as vanilla and lavender together to get the perfect scent.]
Shake all the ingredients together in a spray bottle and refresh every room in your house.
5 parts water
1 part vodka
25 drops of essential oils
Mix ingredients in a spray bottle and enjoy on your favorite linens.
Nothing is more frustrating than going to clean your bathroom, kitchen, or floors only to find that you are out of your favorite cleaning spray. You never have to spend another moment frustrated about cleaning again. With simple household items, an array of cleaners can be made in just minutes!
There are natural pest control solutions depending on the particular critter. For example, peppermint oil will drive away rodents, and spiders hate the smell of lemon. Use these products in the homemade cleaners above and you’re on your way to preventing insects and rodents from entering your home.
However, keep in mind that your situation will sometimes require a little more strength. Because pesticides aren’t used on a daily or even monthly basis, there aren’t the same repercussions as with traditional household cleaners. You just have to use them sparingly. If you have pest problems and are concerned about a product’s effect on your environment, consult your local exterminator for pest control services that will work for you and your green lifestyle.
