Our beagle, Honey, is 7.5 years old and has settled down quite a bit the past few years. She mainly sleeps during the day, only rousing at feeding times. However, if you say the words “walk” or “outside” anywhere near her, she suddenly turns into a puppy – jumping around, whining or sitting very alert. It is a sight to see!
I don’t know what it is about going for walks that is so exciting, but it is the highlight of Honey’s day! Recently my husband and I took her for a long walk in the cold snow.
Honey brings us closer
Going for walks together is not only great exercise for Honey, but it is also a great time for my husband and I to talk. We have some good discussions while we walk, and I think it brings us closer together. It is moments like this that reinforce the bond in our little family of three!
Walking stimulates Honey’s mind
I love watching Honey’s mind work while we are walking. She smells everything (being the good hound that she is) and usually walks with her nose to the ground. I like to think that she is smelling the people and pets that have walked this same way before, and that she is creating stories about them.
Time for relaxing
Every time we take Honey for a long walk, she comes home upbeat and seemingly ready to face the world! About 15 minutes later, she remembers her age and is snoring in her bed or cuddling with my husband on the couch. Like I said, the walks help bring us closer together!
