Picture it: it is the day before Thanksgiving. You’ve started prepping for the big dinner the next day. You realize it is 5:30 and your spouse is looking hungry. What do you do? Well, the last thing I would want to do is spend more time in the kitchen making a meal. This is probably when I would get out the take-out menus and suggest we order out or tell him to find some cereal to eat for dinner (yes, I’ve done this). However, I’m starting to realize that the grocery store has some really great ideas for easy dinners. Here are some tips to make your pre-holiday meals as easy as possible and allow you to spend more time with your family:
The frozen aisle
Have you taken a walk down the frozen aisle lately? There are some really good gems in there amongst the frozen pizzas and game time appetizers. The latest gem I’ve found is Michael Angelo’s Gourmet Foods. Michael Angelo’s meals have real ingredients – CEO Michael Angelo Renna likes to say, “If you can’t find it in Mom’s kitchen, you won’t find it in our food.” Real ingredients=nothing artificial=Yes please! Unlike many other frozen or prepared foods, Michael Angelo’s meals are also free of additives and preservatives.
The biggest reason I like Michael Angelo’s meals? The taste! The other night, I served my husband, dad, sister and niece the Michael Angelo’s Large Family Size Baked Ziti & Meatballs shown above. Everyone loved it… including my 7-year old niece who has become one of the pickiest eaters I know. It really did taste like it was homemade right in our kitchen (of course by someone other than me… I can’t make anything that tastes this good).
The produce section
Another easy idea for your pre-holiday meals is bag salad. You can find them in the produce aisle and they always seem to be on sale. I like to pick up the ones that have everything included: the veggies, toppings and dressing. The one I served with our Baked Ziti & Meatballs was a bacon & blue chopped salad. You can usually find a variety of these all-inclusive bag salads: Southwestern, Asian, Caesar, and more.
The bakery section
You can find a lot of great options in the bakery section of your grocery store. No, I don’t mean cakes and cookies (although I do pick those up too). I mean the variety of fresh breads and rolls. For our dinner the other night, I picked up a loaf of sesame bread that was delicious! You could also use fresh rolls to make easy sandwiches.
“Recipe” for easy dinner
On pre-holiday nights when you just want to spend quality time with your family and not in the kitchen, use my “recipe” for an easy dinner. Take a Michael Angelo’s meal add a bag salad and fresh bread and you have an easy and delicious meal that doesn’t skimp on flavor. Michael Angelo’s meals are available at grocery stores, natural food stores and warehouse club stores nationwide. You are sure to find them near you. Plus, all of these stores will have the other items I mentioned making it really easy to stop in, pick up a few things and get dinner on the table quickly.
Michael Angelo’s has a variety of meals. The next one I want to try is the Shrimp Scampi – YUM!
