I am not one to usually decorate for smaller holidays such as Valentine’s Day. Usually, when I decorate my house, I go all out and I simply can’t bring myself to not go all out so I pick and choose which holidays I’m going to put effort into and those usually end up being the major holidays. However, there are some years I get this wild hair and decide to do a little something for those special little holidays that don’t get very much attention.
I absolutely love hearts and have since I was little. So, naturally, Valentine’s Day has always been a favorite holiday of mine. I decided to get a little creative in the garage with my husband and we came up with the cutest heart décor that anyone can make. It’s just scrap 2×4 pieces cut at an angle and glued together. What’s super fun is the fact that you can make more than one to stack on top of each other or even paint them to be fun colors. We liked our heart plain and simple since the rest of our house is that way and we used two wedge pieces of leftover 2×4 to stand it up. Here is how you can make your own!
How to make an easy rustic wood heart decoration
- Begin by cutting your 2×4 into 4 pieces. 2 pieces at 8 inches in length and 2 at about 6.5 inches in length. When cutting make sure each end of the 8-inch pieces of wood are at a 45-degree angle and that one end is angled one direction and the opposite end the other direction. With the smaller pieces of wood, only one end will be cut at a 45-degree angle.
- On the flat side of your smaller pieces of wood, instead of cutting the 45-degree angle straight on, you will cut in the middle of the flat side so it looks like you’re cutting off the corner of the wood. This will allow half of that tip to still be flat while the outer edge is a 45-degree angle.
- Using your sand paper, sand by hand, any rough edges or spots you can find. Dust off your pieces of wood and paint them at this point if that’s what you desire. Allow them to thoroughly dry before moving on to the next step.
- Putting your heart together is simple. Simply place plenty of wood glue in-between each piece of wood and then use your clamp to clamp the pieces together. Leave the clamp to sit for about 2 hours. Make sure your pieces of wood are straight before leaving it to sit and make sure any glue that may have seeped through the cracks is wiped away before it dries.
It really is pretty easy if you have the right tools! What do you think of this rustic wooden heart?
