Runkeeper is a free app available on both iPhone and Android. It uses GPS to track how far you’ve run, and it stores all of your data on runkeeper.com so that you can look back and compare to an earlier date and set new goals. You can also share your activity on Twitter and Facebook so your friends can cheer you on when you need it the most. In addition, it tracks indoor and outdoor cycling, so if you’re preparing for a triathlon, this is the app for you.
Strava is available for all sorts of devices – iPhone, Android, and multiple other GPS devices. Like Runkeeper, your data is stored on their website. You can join challenges and clubs with your friends and motivate each other, and even compare each other’s efforts. Strava also uses GPS technology to let you know if another runner has been on the same path, and how your stats compare to theirs. The basic version is free, but the premium version costs $6 a month.
