Decorating cakes has increased in popularity over the last few years, thanks in part to the numerous television shows featuring competitions. Most of what you see on television takes years of practice to master; however, there are some easy techniques for dressing up cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other desserts that require few steps and a few tools. This snowflake and cupcake decorating idea is just about as simple as decorating gets – anyone can do it using an edible icing sheet and a punch found in most craft stores.

Snowflake Cupcakes Instructions

The cupcake shows two different snowflakes: one has been punched out of a plain white icing sheet and the other from an icing sheet which has had a snowflake theme printed out on it in edible ink.

snowflake punch used on fondont After the cupcakes are cooled, top them with white icing. The neatest way to do this is to pipe it with a star tip attached to a cake decorating bag. The two snowflake cut-outs are placed on top and a little bit of red icing sugar is sprinkled around them.

The snowflake theme is just one example of what you can print on an icing sheet. The printer is loaded with edible ink cartridges and any design can be printed out on the icing sheet. The printer should be used exclusively for this purpose as the toxins from regular printer ink should not touch food products.

Snowflake Cake

  1. snowflake cakeTo make this blue snowflake cake, first cover the cake board with blue fondant and let it dry (at least overnight).
  2. Cover the cake in blue fondant and place in the center of the cake board.
  3. Create a sausage of fondant to wrap around the base of the cake.
  4. Create design in the border by pressing the fanned fondant tool into the fondant border. (This tool comes in Wilton fondant tool sets sold in Michaels and other craft stores).
  5. Cut a 3” long, 1-1/2” wide piece of blue fondant (1/8” thick). Roll up two pieces of wax paper into a small tube and secure with tape. These will be used to shape the bow. Bring the outer ends to the center, folding over the wax paper tubes, and secure with a little water. Pinch the center to create a bow shape. Cut a small rectangle of fondant (same thickness), fold over the edges and lay this piece in the middle of the bow, tucking the ends behind the bow. The tails of the fondant are cut to the same width of the bow. Use a knife to cut a v-shape in the ends of the tails. Secure the bow to the tails and allow the whole bow to dry. When dry, remove the wax paper and secure the bow to the cake with a little piping gel.
  6. The white snowflakes are cut with 3 different snowflake punches  and attached to the cake with a light coat of piping gel added to the back of them.

These ideas can be applied to endless cake designs simply by using different punches and printing out a variety of different prints on to edible paper using edible ink cartridges.  There are even punches made to create long designs, ideal for using as decorative borders.

That snowflake cake looks gorgeous…although, I’m not great with fondant. Maybe I’ll stick with the cupcakes! Thanks for sharing!

These are beautiful – almost too pretty to eat! Notice I said ‘almost’ as they look very delicious too!! I’ve never considered using a paper punch with icing sheets. Great idea!

I don’t think I could ever pull that off and make it as cute as you did! I love looking at really cute cakes, but that’s as far as I can go! I might be able to do the cupcakes, but that cake is way beyond my skills. I love it!
