Entertain like a gentleman cookbook

Who does the cooking in your household? In my house, it is usually me but my husband lived on his own for 10 years so he is quite capable in the kitchen. I think if more men had good resources, they would be more likely to cook. I recently found the Entertain Like a Gentleman cookbook by David Harap and my husband tested it out.

About the gentleman cookbook

Entertain Like a Gentleman presents over 75 original recipes developed over Harap’s years of experience cooking, entertaining, and teaching cooking classes in the Austin, Texas area. Part cookbook, part how-to guide, Entertain Like a Gentleman is organized into 16 chapters cover all types of gatherings, from Super Bowl parties to Scotch tastings, intimate dinner parties to breakfast in bed. The impressive yet easy-to-prepare recipes use common ingredients and are interspersed with practical tips to help the host keep the festivities on track. (excerpt from book cover)

What my husband thought

My husband decided to try the Texas Chili recipe from the “Poker Night with the Boys” section of the book. As you can see in the photo below, one of the great things about this cookbook is that each recipe not only includes the recipe directions, it also includes an equipment list.

My husband felt that this was perfect for men who don’t usually cook because they may not know what they will need ahead of time and realize part-way through a recipe that they don’t have all of the equipment they need. Nothing like starting a recipe and realizing that you need wax paper or a food processor with none in the house!

Here are some other parts of the book my husband found neat:

  • Each section starts out with some useful information and tips. The “Tailgating in Style” section lists 5 things you should make sure to budget time for so that you don’t miss any of the game, and the “Cheese and Wine Party” section lists some suggested wine-cheese pairings.
  • In the back of the book is a check-off shopping list for each recipe.

I also love the various sections in the book—my favorites are “Double Date Night,” “Breakfast in Bed,” and “Brunch with the In-Laws.” My husband’s favorite was the “Octoberfest” section that is perfect for this time of year!

How to buy the cookbook

Do you have a husband that could benefit from this type of cookbook? Or maybe a relative? You can purchase it through Amazon in paperback or hardcover.

What man in your life could benefit from a book like this?

What a great idea! I have not seen a cookbook that is especially geared for men. This would make a great Christmas gift or graduation gift. Thanks for sharing!

Graduation gift…awesome idea LaVonne! A recent college grad living on his own could really use something like this.

Ever since my husband retired he has taken on all of the dinner menus and cooking. He LOVES to try new recipes. This will be a great Christmas gift for a man who is so hard to buy for. Thanks!
