If you’re like many people out there, you likely have quite an accumulation of “stuff.” You don’t even know where half of it came from, and, truthfully, there are some items that you haven’t used in years. How can you declutter and find a space for everything?
Getting Rid of Garbage
The first step to making more room is to get rid of items that you don’t need anymore. Don’t expect to go through it all in a day, but make it your fall project. Some people don’t want to throw items out and create unnecessary waste. Hold a garage sale to sell some of the items, or donate them to people in need.
Storage Containers, Bins and Bags
When items are sprawled out all over the place, they take up an unnecessary amount of room. However, condensing your items can really help to stop the clutter. Storage bins are excellent containers for soft items, such as your teddy bear collection that only comes out during the holidays, because you can generally fit a lot of them in there. Try to keep similar items together though, and label all of the bins. If you don’t, one day you’re going to be looking for something. Since you don’t know where it is, you’ll start pulling out every single bin, and you’ll create a bigger mess than that with which you started out.
Space Them Out
Do you have one room where you throw all of the items that you don’t use on a daily basis? This is a major reason for all of that clutter. While it might look like you have way too much, you might notice that it actually looks significantly better once you space it out. Pull out a few moving boxes, and start labeling them for all of the different rooms you have. You can go through the items at your own pace, and when one of the boxes is filled up, bring it to its designated room. You’re likely to get more use out of items when they are in their own space too because you don’t have to go digging for them.
Paid Storage Options
When everything that you have just becomes too much to handle, consider what self storage has to offer. For an affordable fee, you’ll be able to put all of your items away until you move into that bigger space or decide what it is that you want to do with them. When you choose this option, you’ll know that the items are being stored securely.
Clutter is such a major problem for so many people. Not only does it make a space look unkempt and not cared for, but it can really be a major distraction. It might bother you every day, but you never feel as though you have the time to clean it up. Just break it down into steps. You can take it day by day. If you never get started, then the project will never be finished.
