Buying your first home can be exciting, but the process of learning to maintain your home and its yard can be a bit overwhelming. If you are new to home-ownership, you might not know what basic items you need to maintain your yard. Here are ten of the most important landscaping tools.
1. Lawn Mower
The first tool you will probably want to get as a homeowner is a lawn mower. In the spring and summer months, you will need to mow your yard about once every week. Depending on how much rain your property gets, you might need to mow more often. Of course, what type of lawn mower you should get will depend entirely on your needs. For example, if you have a large yard, you might choose to purchase a riding lawn mower.
2. Weed Whacker
A weed wacker helps you trim areas of your yard where your lawn mower cannot go. A weed whacker can cut down grass and weeds along fences or landscape edging.
3. Pruning Shears
Pruning shears are especially important if you have any bushes in your yard. If you do not trim back the bushes, they could quickly grow and become unsightly. Some flowering bushes, such as roses, need to be trimmed yearly in order to ensure that they bloom fully and vibrantly.
4. Leaf Blower
A leaf blower can help you clear leaves out of areas where a rake would damage the plants or landscaping. Once you plant flowers and put down mulch or another ground cover, you will want to avoid raking the area. You can purchase gas or electric leaf blowers.
5. Rake
Although leaf blowers are useful for clearing leaves out of garden beds, they can be loud. A rake is a quieter, environmentally-friendly way to remove leaves. Your neighbors will probably appreciate your consideration if you limit your use of your leaf blower and use your rake when possible.
6. Wheelbarrow
For gardeners or homeowners with large yards, a wheelbarrow is an absolute must. You will find yourself using your wheelbarrow for many landscaping tasks, from cleaning up debris after a thunderstorm to hauling bags of mulch to put in your yard’s flowerbeds.
7. Ax
Another handy tool for the homeowner is the ax. You might need an ax to break up large branches that fall in your yard in order to make them easier to remove.
8. Garden Hose And Sprinkler
No matter what plants you put in your yard, they need to be watered. Consider purchasing a garden hose and a sprinkler. Although you could water your plants with a watering can, a garden hose and sprinkler makes it easier to water larger areas. To keep your yard looking green and plush, you should reseed your lawn every year. To make sure that the seed sprouts, your yard will need plenty of water, and watering the whole yard with a watering can would be time-consuming and impractical.
9. Standard Shovel
A standard shovel can be used to dig holes for posts, clear away mud, and dig new garden beds. A standard metal shovel is an inexpensive tool that will get plenty of use in your yard.
10. Snow Shovel
If you live in a climate where snow is a possibility, make sure you own a snow shovel to clear your driveway and sidewalk.

I rent a house, and thankfully I don’t need an ax. I did need an lawn mower and the weed trimmer though.

lol You want me to work in my yard when I work 12-14 hours a day at my job. Thankfully my father takes care of my yard. A good herbicide and 2.5 gallon sprayer is an essential tool. Sometimes it is better to kill the weed down to the roots than just cutting them.

Great list and we need a bunch of those things! Only one we have that isn’t broken or falling apart (or not existant at all) is the snow shovel LOL.

Thanks, Kathleen! We need a sprinkler. It was not fun standing in the yard watering the lawn this year. We planted new seed so it needed to be watered daily…felt like such a waste of time!
Consider a manual lawnmower, much better for the environment.
