How to make a small space seem bigger

If you have a very small space that you would like to make look bigger, there are a few things that can be done in order to achieve this effect.  In this article we will review several things that people can do to increase the visual appearance of a small household area.

Lighter paint

The first step that you can take is to repaint the walls in the area of concern in a shade that is significantly lighter and which will help to create the illusion of an open, large space.  Pale blues and light creamy shades are just a few of the ideal color selections for broadening a small space.  Light colors help small areas to look larger and can open them up.  Many people believe that in order to make their rooms look bigger, they will need to paint them white, however, many lighter paint shades can actually produce this same illusion.  When you have the chance, purchase several paint testers and paint a few small swatches on your wall so that you can determine whether or not different colors are able to coordinate well with your flooring and existing furnishings.

Brighten with light

You can additionally change the lighting in the area that you hope to open up.  Lighting is a vital resource when attempting to make a space look bigger.  With the right lighting you can make a tremendous difference in a room.  Do not cover your windows with solid and dark window treatments, but use blinds or sheer curtains instead that can be opened up during the daylight hours in order to let the sunlight in.  If the space does not receive adequate natural light you can incorporate extra lighting in the room to enhance the appearance of its size.  Lamps should be avoided as much as possible as they will cast their light downward which will not help to make the room look bigger at all and will even increase the cluttered appearance of a very small room.  You can opt instead for floor lamps that have bulbs which are very bright.

Create an illusion

Adding a wall mirror to the space will create the illusion of more open areas.  This illusion can be enhanced by simply using the mirror to reflect the light that comes in through the window or which is cast by lamps.  Using a very large mirror will help you to create the illusion of a very large amount of open space.  In fact, incorporating a wall mirror into your room design is one of the least expensive and easiest ways to make a room look bigger and more open.

Eliminate clutter

Eliminating any unnecessary furnishings or clutter in the area will also allow it to look more spacious.  Simply getting rid of furnishing and clutter  will not cost you a thing and it is also a very easy and cost-effective way to increase the visual space of a room. Furniture that is rarely ever used and accumulations of junk will simply use up vital space and will make the room look more confined and small.

Use pictures sparingly

Last, do not use a ton of pictures to cover the walls.  One large-sized picture often looks best, rather than a number of smaller ones.  If too many paintings or pictures are hung on your wall, the room will appear too busy.

You can make your room appear far more open and much bigger by simply using these tips.

I usually grab inspiration from what other people have done. That is why I like Pinterest so much!
