Managing money and debt is important irrespective of the situation you are in life. Money management is very important for newlyweds in order to keep your relationship healthy. If you start managing money from the very beginning, you will hopefully never have to opt for debt relief options like debt settlement, management or consolidate debt in order to pay off your debts. So, what are the mistakes that you will have to avoid as newlyweds or best practices for newlyweds?
The money mistakes to avoid
Some of the money mistakes that you should avoid as newlyweds are:
- Not practicing good communication – One of the greatest mistakes that most couples make is not communicating. As newlyweds, you should start communicating about your finances. Lack of communication spells bad omen for all aspects of your marriage.
- Not preparing a budget – Budgeting helps you with lowering your expenditures as much as possible. With budgeting, you will easily be able to keep track of your income and your expenses. Prepare the budget when both of you are free and can give ample time to think about and prepare the budget.
- Starting to spend on impulse – Although it may be difficult, you should always avoid spending on impulse. Making money is becoming tougher day by day; so, you will have to be extremely wise in order to decide what things that you should spend money on. Discuss these things as a couple before going shopping.
- Not knowing the laws – The laws on property and debt with regards to marriage varies from state to state. There are some states that do not consider that property or debt is to be divided equally between the spouses. Yet, there are some states that believe otherwise and thus in such states, according to the law both the spouses are held responsible for the debt incurred by the other. It is very important to be aware of the laws and any debts incurred by your spouse.
- Not making the regular debt payments – Making regular payments against your debts is very important. Not making payments is simply going to result in increased debt, and added stress in your marriage.
These are some of the money mistakes you should avoid in order to keep from falling deep into debt during the early years of your marriage. Debt can wreck both of your credit scores and may also have a negative effect on your marriage.

My wife and I fell victim to impulse buying following our wedding. After spending so long saving and living frugally we kind of enjoyed the new money after our wedding and forgot to carry on budgeting. All sorted now, but could of saved a bit more if we kept ours heads.
