Working Out with your Spouse

After getting married, it seems to be so easy to put on the pounds.  For me, I have gained about 15 pounds in the last 2 years and I am currently struggling to get the weight off.  Both my husband and I love to eat…we love restaurants…and I absolutely love dessert!  However, my husband loves to workout…and me…not so much.  Recently, I read how working out with your spouse can be very healthy for your relationship.  So, I am determined to get back in shape by exercising with my hubby.

Running and talking…it is possible!

First I decided to take up running again.  My husband and I have been training for a 5K by running 3 times a week together.  Believe it or not, I have enjoyed this time.  At first, I couldn’t even talk while we ran, but he would talk to me and motivate me.  Now, I can run 3.5 miles and have conversations with him.  It is great, we talk about all sorts of things that we probably wouldn’t make time for normally.  I know that he really likes the fact that I am taking an interest in working out, something he has enjoyed since his preteens.

Weight training with kettle bells

Cardio workouts have been my downfall.  Lifting weights was always so much easier for me to stick with.  Recently, my husband got into kettle bells.  If you haven’t heard of them before, they kind of look like a combination of a tea kettle and a cannon ball…maybe that is where the name came from? Not sure.  Anyway, he did some research and decided to use a DVD system by Michael Skoggs.  If you are interested, you can find it here.  Well, next thing you know, I have my own kettle bells and we are working side-by-side with this system.  It is actually fun.  I enjoy it because it combines cardio and weight training into one.  You are sweating up a storm by the end of the workout.

My progress

So, I have my cardio, my weight training and I am doing both with my husband.  It is true, it has helped our relationship…we have something else in common, and we are spending time together.  As for the weight I gained, it seems to want to stick around.  I will lose a couple pounds and then gain it back.  I guess it is time to start giving my diet a closer look…eek!

Do you and your spouse workout together?  What do you do?

That is so great that your husband is a big motivator! That helps out so much and makes working out just that much easier… And I hear you about your love of restaurants! So do I. I go there wayyy to much :)

That is great! Are you taking classes, or did you buy a DVD?
